Narcissist or Avoidant? 5 Ways to Tell the Difference – Last First Date

Posted by in attachment styles, dating a narcissist | 0 comments

    narcissist or avoidantnarcissist or avoidant

Are they a narcissist or avoidant? Here are five ways to tell the difference in the early stages of dating after 40.

    —

In the early stages of dating, it can be confusing when someone pulls away, sends mixed signals, or struggles with emotional closeness. Two patterns that often get mistaken for each other are narcissism and avoidant attachment. Both can involve distance and inconsistency, but the underlying motivations are very different.

Understanding the difference matters. An avoidant person may struggle with vulnerability but still care deeply about you. A narcissist, on the other hand, tends to center the relationship around their own needs and ego. Here are five ways to tell the difference.

Narcissist or Avoidant? 5 Ways to Tell the Difference

    1. How Do They Respond to Your Needs?

An avoidant partner may feel overwhelmed by emotional needs and temporarily pull back. But when they’re calm again, they often show some concern for how you feel. An emotionally intelligent avoidant might say something like, “I get overwhelmed when things get intense, but I don’t want to hurt you.”

A narcissist typically dismisses or minimizes your needs. Your feelings are seen as inconvenient or dramatic. Instead of curiosity, you will probably hear criticism, defensiveness, or blame.

    Avoidant: overwhelmed by closeness
Narcissist: uninterested in your emotional experience

    2. What Happens When You Set a Boundary?

Healthy boundaries are a revealing moment in dating.

Avoidant partners might initially withdraw or feel uncomfortable, but they generally respect boundaries once they understand them. They may even appreciate the clarity because it reduces emotional pressure.

A narcissist is more likely to push against boundaries, ignore them, or punish you for setting them. This can show up as guilt-tripping, anger, silent treatment, or attempts to make you feel selfish for having limits.

Avoidant: backs away but usually respects limits
    Narcissist: challenges or punishes limits

    3. What’s Their Capacity for Self-Reflection?

Avoidants are often aware that intimacy is difficult for them. They might admit they struggle with closeness or say they need time to process emotions. If they’re doing personal growth work, they may actively try to improve, which is ideal.

Narcissists rarely take responsibility for relational problems. If something goes wrong, it’s almost always someone else’s fault. Self-reflection threatens their self-image, so blame and deflection become the default.

    Avoidant: capable of self-awareness
    Narcissist: consistently blames others

    4. What’s The Early Dating Experience Like?

Narcissists often come on very strong early in dating. They may shower you with attention, compliments, and grand promises, also known as “love bombing”. This intensity can feel intoxicating at first but often shifts once they feel they’ve “won” your attention.

Avoidant partners tend to move more slowly. They might enjoy the connection but become uneasy when things start to feel emotionally serious. Their pattern is more about gradual distancing than intense early pursuit.

    Avoidant: cautious about emotional escalation
Narcissist: intense pursuit followed by devaluation

    5. How Do You Feel Around Them Over Time?

Your emotional experience is often the clearest signal.

Dating an avoidant person can feel frustrating or confusing, especially when they withdraw. But you may still feel respected and valued, even if closeness is inconsistent.

Dating a narcissist often leaves you feeling smaller over time. You may feel criticized, drained, anxious, or like you’re constantly trying to earn approval. The relationship slowly becomes more about managing their ego than building a partnership.

    Avoidant: distance without emotional erosion
Narcissist: gradual loss of your sense of self

Neither dynamic is easy. Avoidant attachment can still create painful push-pull patterns if the person isn’t willing to grow. And narcissistic behavior can be deeply damaging if it becomes the foundation of a relationship.

The key difference is capacity. An avoidant partner may struggle with intimacy but still care about your experience and be capable of growth. A narcissist tends to prioritize their own needs at the expense of the relationship.

When you’re dating after 40, emotional clarity is one of your greatest assets. The goal isn’t to diagnose someone. It’s to notice patterns, trust how you feel in the relationship, and choose partners who have the emotional capacity to meet you halfway.

She Gave You Buying Signals…But You Froze | Doc Love

DOC’S SYSTEM WAS CREATED BASED ON THOUSANDS OF INTERVIEWS WITH WOMEN – WHAT HE LEARNED FROM WOMEN IS TAUGHT TO YOU WEEKLY HERE.

THE KEY LINE:  The System asks do you usually play it so safe? While you’re busy doing only what you think you should do and not doing what you think you shouldn’t, your love life is going nowhere fast.

READ ON AND DON’T FORGET ABOUT
    THE SPRING SALE!

    Dear Doc,

I have this friend, I’ll call her Karen. Very pretty. She’s also a great dresser and she has a very “classy” air about her. Even though I’m not dating anyone right now, I’m not romantically interested in her any way. She’s just not my type physically. But we really do get along well. She’s like my one good female friend right now. We both love to play pool and we go out to this trendy pool hall in Hollywood together usually, on Tuesday nights. There’s really quite a scene going on there, even on Tuesday nights, and the place is just teaming with single women every time we go.

There’s a situation that keeps coming up when we’re out together that I’m not sure how to handle. It happened again just last night when we were at the pool hall. Karen had gone to the bar to get us a couple of beers. During the five minutes that she was gone, this exotic looking girl who had been playing pool with her girlfriend at the table next to us, walked right over to me and asked me for advice on how to properly hold the cue stick. She said her name was “Randa.”

Now I know from reading your articles that that was a sign of her having some Interest Level in me. She didn’t have to come over and ask for my advice. It was pretty obvious that it was an excuse that she had created to make contact with me. We joked around for a couple minutes, and I made her laugh. But she had already seen me with Karen. (Karen touches me a lot so in this girl’s mind, Karen and I were probably boyfriend and girlfriend, or at least out on a date.)

Then Karen came back with the beers. I wanted to ask Randa for her phone number but I didn’t because, first of all, I didn’t feel comfortable doing that right in front of Karen. Even though we’re just friends, I felt like it wouldn’t be a classy thing to do. And secondly, I was afraid that I would look like a sneaky cheat or a jerk in Randa’s eyes if I asked her for her phone number while I was with a girl who she most likely thought was my date.

Still, I’m not sure whether Randa would have cared about that or not. She did come on to me even though she had already seen me with Karen. Or maybe she came on to me BECAUSE she saw me with Karen. Anyway you see my problem here? And this situation has come up more than once.

So, Doc, what does your “System” say about dealing with this kind of situation?

Frankie – who wants to do the right thing

    Hey Frankie,

Is this the way you live your whole life, always sacrificing your needs for the approval of others? Do you usually play it so safe? While you’re busy doing only what you think you should do and not doing what you think you shouldn’t, your love life is going nowhere fast. There you are, out with your female FRIEND who you have no romantic interest in, and you’re afraid of offending her by making a play for another woman? Look, dude, if she’s your friend, then she’s your friend. That means she has the same status as a GUY who is your friend. As my cousin “Fast Eddie” Love would say, “Friends support and encourage each other when it comes to makin’ out.”

If you had asked Randa for her phone number right then and there, and Karen wound up being bothered by that, it would have meant one of two things. Either she’s not really your friend, or she likes you romantically and you’re oblivious to it. But, I’d bet that if you had made your move with Randa, that Karen would have been just as pleased as punch for you. You were afraid to risk Karen’s disapproval when there was no risk.

As far as Randa goes, she knew nothing about the nature of your relationship with Karen. No one said anything to her about Karen being your girlfriend. For all she knew, Karen could have been your big sister. Anyway, Randa was obviously giving you plenty of buying-signals. She didn’t seem to be so concerned about what Karen might think, so why should you have? I’m sure Randa wondered why the hell you didn’t ask her for her number.

If you aren’t ready for THE SYSTEM – why not download Doc’s FREE 7-day dating course and take Doc’s principles for a test drive?

Frankie, you’re lucky to have a great woman like Karen who likes to pal around with you. I’d suggest that you take her out with you every chance you get and use her to help you meet women. You can help her meet guys, too. It’s called ‘The Buddy System’.

Karen obviously has a lot of ‘strike power’ and that only makes you look more alluring to the other kitty cats when they see you with her, as you’ve already experienced.

Remember, guys, if you have a beautiful female buddy, be sure to take her with you when you go out hunting.

  • Dating Coach Birmingham: Powerful Reasons to Use One

Dating Coach Birmingham: Powerful Reasons to Use One

If dating in Birmingham has started to feel more like a part-time job than a path to love, you are definitely not alone. Between dead-end app chats, ghosting, mixed signals, and dates that look great on paper but fall flat in real life, it is easy to feel frustrated, jaded, and a bit fed up.

That is exactly where coaching changes everything.

    Key Takeaways

    • Dating in Birmingham is hard when you are busy, selective, and tired of wasting emotional energy on people who are not right for you.

    • This post helps you understand how expert coaching can fix your dating blind spots and speed up your path to a real relationship.

    • Choose a coach with proven experience, tailored advice, and a clear plan rather than more generic tips or random app luck.

    • This is for single professionals who want clarity, confidence, and better dates that actually lead somewhere.

If you have been searching for a Dating Coach Birmingham, chances are you do not need more vague advice from friends who met their partner ten years ago and still think “just be yourself” is a strategy. You need someone who understands modern dating properly, sees what is going wrong fast, and can help you turn things around.

That is where James Preece comes in.

James is not just another person handing out fluffy confidence tips on the internet. He is one of the UK’s best-known Dating Coaches, with over 21 years of experience helping singles find love, rebuild confidence, improve their date results, and stop repeating the same patterns. He has worked across more than 50 different dating companies and also coaches clients worldwide via Zoom, which means Birmingham singles can get expert help wherever they are, whether they are in the city centre, Edgbaston, Harborne, Moseley, Sutton Coldfield, or just outside the city.

So what kind of people does he work with?

Usually, they are busy professionals who are great at many areas of life but feel completely stuck when it comes to dating. They might be successful in business, respected by friends, and perfectly capable adults who can run a team, buy a house, and organise a holiday in five minutes flat, yet still freeze when trying to write a good dating profile or work out why a promising date suddenly vanishes.

Some are newly single after divorce. Some are exhausted by dating apps. Some keep attracting the wrong people. Others have lost confidence after heartbreak, rejection, or too many “almost” relationships. And quite a few are simply tired of being told they are amazing while their love life continues to resemble an abandoned group chat.

This is why working with Dating Coach Birmingham support is so valuable when it is personalised properly. Instead of guessing, hoping, and overthinking every little interaction, you get a clear strategy built around you.

A good dating coach does not just tell you to “put yourself out there.” James helps you understand why things have not been working and what needs to change first. That could mean sharpening your mindset, improving your texting, rewriting your dating profile, choosing better first date venues, reading mixed signals more accurately, learning how to flirt naturally, or breaking habits that keep pushing the right people away.

For Birmingham singles, local context matters too. Dating in a big, lively city brings plenty of opportunity, but it also brings choice overload. You can go on countless dates around Brindleyplace, the Jewellery Quarter, or along the canals and still end up feeling like you are getting nowhere. The issue usually is not a lack of people. It is a lack of strategy.

That is why James’s coaching works so well. It is practical, honest, and tailored. He is warm and supportive, but he will also tell you the truth. Kindly, of course. There is no point paying for coaching if all you get is a pep talk and a motivational nod. You need real feedback.

    That feedback might include:

    • why your profile is attracting the wrong matches

    • why your first dates are not creating enough chemistry

    • why your standards are either too low or accidentally impossible

    • why your messaging style is losing momentum

    • why you keep ending up in situationships instead of relationships

    • why nerves, people-pleasing, or over-investing too early are sabotaging your chances

These are the pain points people search for every day, and they are exactly the kind of problems James helps solve.

The coaching process itself is straightforward. First, you look at where you are now, what has been happening, and what result you actually want. Then James helps you create a realistic plan. Depending on your situation, that can include confidence coaching, dating app support, profile rewrites, first date coaching, communication skills, attraction building, body language advice, and learning how to choose people who are emotionally available instead of just exciting for ten minutes.

If you want a taste of that kind of practical guidance, his article on decode body language fast on a date is a smart place to start. It is exactly the sort of advice that helps singles stop second-guessing themselves and start reading dating situations more clearly.

And if you are also considering whether matchmaking might suit you better than endless swiping, this guide to Dating Agency Birmingham is especially relevant because it speaks directly to the frustrations many Birmingham singles are already feeling.

Now let us talk results, because that is what really matters.

When people work with James, they usually start noticing changes quickly. They feel clearer. More confident. Less emotionally drained. They stop chasing the wrong people. They communicate better. Their profiles improve. Their dates feel smoother. They become more attractive because they are more self-aware, more relaxed, and far less likely to sabotage things by accident.

Most importantly, they stop wasting time.

That is a huge win for anyone searching for Dating Coach Birmingham help. Because when your love life has been stuck for months or years, time is not a small thing. It is the one thing you do not get back.

Working with James also means you are getting someone with serious trust points behind him. He is widely known in the dating industry, has spent decades helping singles and working with major dating brands, and has built a reputation for being both honest and effective. He understands men and women, online dating and offline dating, confidence and compatibility, and the emotional messiness that comes with modern romance.

So whether you are a successful professional in Birmingham who wants to meet someone on your level, a newly single parent wondering how to start again, or someone who is simply tired of hearing “you’ll meet someone when you least expect it” from smug relatives at family gatherings, James can help you move forward with an actual plan.

And yes, he offers Zoom sessions, so you do not need to battle traffic, parking, or train delays to get expert support. You can get high-level coaching from wherever you are and start fixing the parts of your dating life that have been holding you back.

    Dating Coach Birmingham Conclusion

The truth is simple. Dating gets easier when you stop trying to solve everything alone.

If you have been stuck in the same cycles, choosing the wrong people, doubting yourself, or losing hope, now is the time to do something different. Coaching gives you clarity, momentum, and expert insight that can save you months or even years of frustration.

If you want real results, not recycled advice, working with an Dating Coach Birmingham expert like James Preece could be the smartest move you make this year.

Over the course of twenty years of delivering sailboats to far-flung quaysides, John Kretschmer has had innumerable adventures, both humorous and terrifying. In Flirting with Mermaids, he recounts the most memorable of them.
He crosses the Western Caribbean with a crew of eccentric Swedes researching ancient Mayan mariners, lands in Aden at the outbreak of civil war, and endures a North Atlantic crossing during which he discovers the existence of Force 13 winds.

Approaching Japan at the end of a particularly trying delivery, he finds himself sailing in “a high impact debris zone,” but his resolve is unshaken. “If a piece of rocketship jetsam fell out of the sky and sank [me] after encounters with Hurricane Floyd, General Noriega, a tsunami, an erupting volcano, and Typhoon Roy, then it was meant to be.”
